Some people would wonder,
• Who is behind all these courses and kits at GSS Tech Ed, Inc.?
• What gives you expertise in electronics?
Bio of Gary Gibson, founder and creator of GSSTechEd.
At age 10 I took an interest in electronics when a friend of mine had a radio kit. I wanted to know how it worked. How is it that it would “talk” when it was not connected up to a thing. He held it in his hand and it “talked”.
From that time, I started reading all I could about electronics. I checked out books from the library and borrowed books from friends. I got my HAM license and read the ARRL Ham radio books.
When I was about 17, I wanted to get a job repairing radios and TVs. Since I had no formal education in electronics, they would not hire me. I needed some kind of Certificate to prove my knowledge before they would let me work on any radios and TVs. (I wish these courses would have been available.)
Frustrated, I opened my first business to sell TVs and repair them. I worked out of my parent’s garage. I called my business Stereo-Tronics. I sold Packard Bell televisions and repaired car radios for friends and neighbors. That was hot and hard work hanging over car seats reaching under the dashes to remove radios to fix them.
At 18 I started college at Valley College in Van Nuys. I wanted to take electronics classes but I already knew the stuff they were teaching so I took a position at the college maintaining test equipment that students would use during their electronics classes.
One night, as I was doing my job while an electronics class was in session, a student in the class approached me and asked, “Do you know how to repair all these pieces of equipment?” and I said, “Yes”. He said, “Wow, IBM would probably be very interested in hiring you.
So, in short order, I was off to IBM to apply. I was too young they said. You have to be 19 before we can hire you. So I waited until I was 19 and hired on the next day with IBM. They trained me to maintain and repair their electronic data processing equipment for UCLA and the General Telephone Company in Santa Monica.
Since then, I have worked for Lockheed Aircraft, DHI Computing, LA City Schools as a math teacher, Jordan High School as a math teacher, founded electronics companies to sell consumer electronics, founded a company which was the Authorized Warranty Station for over 120 consumer electronics brands, including Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, etc. I trained all the techs on how to repair TVs, stereo, tape players, and car radios.
In 1974 I started another company to provide schools with electronics kits for students to assemble in Tech Ed classes. I started it in California and before long I was selling across the nation. One day I was approached by some business men from South America about translating my materials into Spanish and selling them all over the world in Spanish. This we did and they are still available.
I forgot to mention that in the middle of all this I served a religious mission to Mexico for 2 and ½ years and became proficient in the Spanish language. I later graduated from San Jose State College in Spanish, French and Mathematics.
Then I founded another company to produce electronic computers for shipping packages. I presented my shipping computer to the US Post Office in WASH DC and the UPS in Stamford, CT and they both loved it. In fact, they both copied it and are still using it today. I started manufacturing it and set up the well known Sunset House distribution company using my systems. It got such rave reviews that Bell and Howell bought my company.
One of my favorite “coups” was when Heathkit, the electronics kit giant, purchased $65,000 dollars worth of my electronics kits for all their 60 retail stores across the nation. I had always admired Heathkit and had fun building many of their kits. Wow, they bought from me.
Another time was when the Marine Corps bought 5000 of my “How to fix radio” courses. Since then, the US Army has purchased many of my current courses, the same that are now available on my website.
